2017 Good Way Family Day!
Good Way held the annual Family Day on Saturday, 3/18 to bring the employees and their families outdoor and at the same time show the company’s appreciation for the work they have done over this past year. The event held in Mike Farm in Xinchu, with a total of 196 participants, was aimed for helping Good Way’s employees to reach the balance of work and leisure.
Once all the employees and their families arrived at Mike Farm, C.E.O. of Good Way, Robert Tsao, welcomed everyone with a short speech. The guides of Mike Farm led everyone to ride the Iron-cow car, see the animals, such as cows, turkeys, goats and piggy. Most of the children had not seen or been so close to the animals; they were very excited to see these animals. Mike Farm replaced cow carriage with motored car (Iron-cow car) to protect the cows and also delivered the message of love and respect for animals.
Xinchu is famous for the rice culture of Hakka. The family day participants experienced how to operate the traditional stone mill to make rice juice. Everyone was very eager to try and found out it was harder than it seemed. It was a good lesson for the children because they realized the effort and hardship of farmers. The next activity was to roll up the rice crepe, which was made by pure rice with zero preservatives.
The second stop of the DIY activity was to make Red Rice Cake, also called Red Turtle Rice Cake. The rice cake was made from dehydrated rice dough (grinded rice with water). The rice dough could be made into salty or sweet rice cakes, with shapes such as turtle and peach. Both shapes represent auspicious and long-life. The next step was to put in the stuffing and fill the press set with the stuffed dough.
Then the rice cakes were ready to be steamed!
The third DIY station was Hakkanese veggie bum. This kind of veggie bum was made with grinded sweet rice with stuffing such sliced and marinated radish, mushrooms, pork and Chinese shallots. To demonstrate, the guide first made the dough into a small bowl ad filled in the stuffing. Once the employees began to put the hands on the dough, they realized it was not as easy as it seemed. One of the employees even said, “ I think I’ll just buy one instead of make it ! ”
Once waiting for the rice cakes to be steamed, the guide brought everyone to the scarecrow area, where the parents (employees) and their children could interact with each other and make scarecrow from scratch. The activity was aimed for the employees to create bonding with their families, especially with their children, who were used to play computer games and cell phones. However, the children of Good Way’s employees were very excited when playing with the hay.
At noon, BBQ and earth oven were prepared for lunch. Good Way also prepared small gifts, such as bubble maker and water guns, for the children. We also played games together, so the colleague could interact with each other.
The fourth DIY activity was the Pounded Tea, which was very famous in the Hakka culture. Many of the colleagues only knew it from TV and they were excited about actually making it. First, pour in the grains and tea leaves into a big bowl and grind the ingredients until oil comes out. It took participants a long time to grind the tea into smooth powder, but the colleagues said that although it was kind of exhausted, it was nice for the families to do something together and make the tea together. While the colleagues rotated to grind the tea, the rest of the people chatted and ate snacks.
After the pounded tea DIY activity, the guide took everyone to an area, where we could see traditional farming equipment and tools. Many participants had not seen these tools before; it was very educational!
At the end of the Family Day, C.E.O. Robert Tsao said, “ Family Day is for the employees to spend time with their families and co-workers, getting to know each other and re-evaluate the relationships. I want to assure the families that our employees are working very hard and being taken care of by Good Way. Thank you very much for coming today. We had a lot of fun! I hope we can all bring wonderful memories back home.”
CEO Tsao also gave every employee a gift of pounded tea as a souvenir. The employees gave positive feedback for the family day and was very happy to experience the Hakkanese food and DIY activities. The sweet potatoes and corn cooked by the giant earth oven were very popular among the participants. Even flipping the meat on the BBQ net was fun and soothing. Most importantly, Good Way’s the employees spent quality time with families and colleagues. We all look forward to next time's Family Day !
